I, Olga Hepnarová

foto-olga-hepnarovaI, Olga Hepnarova, a victim of your bestiality, hereby sentence you to death by being run overand declare that the lives of so many people in exchange for my life are but a small price.

The main character in the film, Olga Hepnarova, is a twenty - two - year - old girl who weighed on the conscience of the entire nation on 10 July 1973. On that day she killed eight people.

The film is a story of a lonely person. On the one hand, her solitude resulted from having a cold - hearted family, as well as from being a p art of a sexual minority. She suffered from being different in a society that maintained a hostile attitude towards people . On the other hand, her suffering was due to her reclusive nature and her always taking things too personally. Her incessant, almost paranoid self - examining, her self - interpretation of people around her as well as their behaviour towards each other and, more importantly, towards herself, drove her over the very limits of humanity. Olga was trying to break her loneliness. She was t rying to run away from the surroundings she hated, yet she kept crashing with it. This is also why she "handled" the situation by locking herself even further away. Yet, not even inside her own universe, was she able to content herself, to find happiness, a sense. The tragedy was the result of both her hatred of the society and her gradually realizing she equally hated her own self.
